It sure is neat to watch the evolution of popular misuc.

Ediwn Birdsong, according to Wikipedia,  “is a keyboard/organ player who was known in the 70’s and 80’s for his experimental funk/disco music.” And y’know what?

    I’d never heard of him.

And I fancy myself as possessing a pretty eclectic taste in music; I like a lot of weird non-mainstream stuff: The Moog Cookbook, the Alan Parsons Project, Ray Lynch, and Synergy.

So why the hell is Birdsong so special? He never hit the charts, despite his pretty hefty following. His most noteworthy musical accomplishment, though, is that he’s sampled by a number of different artists and Edward’s work becomes construction materials for other songs.

The most notable of late: Birdsong’s Cola Bottle Baby:

was sampled to help create Harder, Faster, Better, Stronger–a song, by Daft Punk:

…which was itself sampled in creation of the Kanye West song Stronger:

Now, it’s pretty popular now to be hatin’ on Kanye, and I’m no exception; hell, even President Obama called West a jackass for his scruple-less drunken display at the VMAs.

In fact, the only reason I even mention Kanye’s song in the first place is because my first exposure to any of this set of musical styling was from hearing Stronger on the radio one day. I thought the background was catchy, and so I searched YouTube for the instrumental version of Stronger–I personally think Kanye’s rap overlay is pretty stupid, and far too gangsta for my tastes, and much prefer Stronger without his ridiculous self-aggrandizing, misogynistic, rap bullshit on top of it.

Fortunately for me, I stumbled across the Daft Punk and West connection through, of all things, this Engadget article–and rejoiced that the Daft Punk original of Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger is remarkably better than Kanye West’s vomitous, bullshit, stupid rap-hip-hop remix.

As an aside, I immediately recognized the opening licks from Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger from the online Flash game, Kitten Cannon.

I then read, again in Wikipedia while reading up on Daft Punk, that they had sampled Birdsong’s track Cola Bottle Baby for Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger and that was really the opening licks from Kitten Cannon.

    Wild.

Light Peak Technology looks like the most promising new technology in the computing arena since the invention of the Universal Serial Bus (USB). I can’t wait to see what they do with it!

As an aside, I can’t help but notice that that technical folks have an uncanny ability to make the most breathtaking technical breakthroughs and innovations sound about as exciting as a colonoscopy. No matter; we already know that Intel has a great marketing arm–I just love their “Rock Star” commercial:
